Information for visitors to cultural attractions

This paper examines the information needs of visitors to the Science Museum in London. It is based on a case study at the Museum, but draws conclusions which can be more generally applied to museums, galleries, stately homes and similar attractions. It defines the types of information which various classes of visitors require, the data resources which are necessary to provide this information, and the technical systems necessary to deliver the information. Several surveys of visitor information requirements are reviewed and are drawn together to develop an overall requirement for visitor information and requirements for remote access to information. A logical structure and technical plan are developed and there is an in-depth cost-benefit analysis.
