Information management and corporate total quality

This paper examines the principal models of total quality (TQ) from the perspective of their information man agement (IM) content, expressed and implied. The models chosen include those underlying the Deming Prize of Japan, the US Presidential Award for Qualay, the European Quality Award and the proposed UK Prime Minister's Award for Total Quality, but discussion focuses upon the US Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award model. It demonstrates that on the basis of the criteria and scoring guidelines specified in these models, the effectiveness of an organisation's IM prac tices is critical to achieving corporate TQ The process of benchmarking, together with a brief case-study based on Corning Incorporated, are used to exemplity the role of IM in the TQ organisation
