Careers and the occupational image

Drawing on matenal from studies conducted by the author, in the area of manpower, education and training, during the 1980s, this paper covers several linked themes. Self-actualiza tion within the employing organization is explored, including the effect of employer and user images of library-information work. Formal and informal vocational education is also ex amined, in relation to curriculum development and the un derlying, but largely unanswered question of 'education for what?' The emerging market and the traditional market for library-information professionals are also considered, in con junction with the stereotype as a conditioner of acceptability in new employment venues.
